Jack
Clarke
Jack
became a ham on Valentine's Day in 1964. Of course, he promptly
forgot about that and didn't realize it until about 25 years later when
some friends on the "aftermath" of the Baja Net were discussing
when they received their licenses. When he looked up the date on his
license, he found it was February 14th, 1964.
He
first began operation on the Baja Net in 1967 when he lived in the San
Fernando Valley. It was called Kate's Navy then. He was
beginning to develop an interest in cruising on a sailboat; so, was
attracted to the group.
Participation
in the net was sporadic until 1975 when he bought a boat and began living
aboard and preparing to go cruising. He cruised the coast of
California while trying to make a living at his new venture as a
"boat-bum". Having spent all his savings on the boat, he
needed to work his way along. After building his own refrigeration
system, he decided that perhaps that would be a way to work his way around
the world.
He
didn't get around the world; but, he sailed to Hawaii and back in
1980. Then, in 1987 and 1988, he made his way around Mexico cruising
on a shoe string. All this time, he was a regular on the Baja Net.
After
returning from Mexico, he decided to become more involved with the
net. He has been a net control or a relay ever since, currently
holding down the Saturday position.
After
living aboard his Sparkman & Stephens 40' sailboat for 17 years, he
sold the boat in 1992 and bought a motorhome. He has travelled most
of the 50 states in the motorhome and currently lives aboard in San
Diego. In RVs, they called it "full timer". He still
calls it "living aboard".
